The Professional Roofer’s Checklist

The Range of “Professional” Roofers is Wide

It’s not hard to look into a group of roofers and determine who are more than likely the professional roofers among them. At the least professional, you have people presenting themselves as someone who could fix a homeowner’s roof correctly – when they might have no intention to.  The most professional roofer – conversely – adds quality to the investment that is a home.  There is an arch in the roofing business that advances to a supreme level of professionalism.

Are you a professional roofer?

If you can answer “YES!” to most of the following items then you are a professional roofer, or on the right track to becoming one, and should market yourself as such.

  1. Does your state require licensing? If so – are you licensed?
  2. Do you pull the correct local permits for every job?
  3. Are you a member of the Better Business Bureau for your state?
  4. Do you definitely know that you have no unresolved customer complaints on record?
  5. Do you carry proper liability and workers’ compensation insurance?
  6. Are you willing to give past clients as references?
  7. Once you have been selected to do a roofing job – do you have a signed contract?
  8. Do you belong to a roofing association?
  9. Can you show your expertise and interest in growth in the field through professional training certification?
  10. Can you offer your customer certification in building to create a safer home?

How do you feel about your professionalism now?

You may notice that the list “escalates” in the expectations of a roofing professional – and hopefully helps you line up your goals. It’s up to you to consider where you fall after reviewing your answers and if you’re happy with the your results.
